The alumni game was held on May 8, 2010. The Champions
of Life were a bit nervous leading up to the game with many stalwarts unable to attend to weddings out of the country and
various other shitty excuses. Upon arriving at the pitch the Champions were happy to find approximately 22 players sober
and ready to roll. The pregame stretch involved a lot of catching up amongst members and a lot of discussion of how
Eddie Cullen looked healthy and coherent for the first time in 4 years. After that the ref of the day Jeff Miragliotta
brought the two sides together to explain how the day would work (no crying or questioning), and Spike then walked up
and down the undergrads reminding them that they are undergrads. After this interaction Father Tueth came to bless both
teams, the blessing was delayed do to Smooth's tardiness, as Father Tueth believed we should wait because "Smooth needs
the blessing more than anyone."
With that the game began, Old Maroon started with a strong rucking game
as Old Maroon had a size advantage. With Org and Viking controlling the rucks, Old Maroon began utilizing crash balls
to their designated runners Spike and Pando. After a few offloads scrummy Kevin Lavelle would swing the ball out to
Eddie Cullen and Kevin Hyland (game MVP). Old Maroon took a 10-0 lead at the half with scores coming from Kevin Hyland
and Jimmy Greco who was playing wing after warming up as a prop.
After that the undergrads put in a few utilizing
open gaps and their speed. The venerable one Mike Flynn did a nice job at fullback but couldn't prevent every score
back there. After the Fordham scrummy scored and made the mistake of celebrating the Old Maroon switch turned on, and
Old Maroon put in two tries to end the game and converted kicks were made by the crazy doctor Evan Shehaha. Final
score 24-10. From there everyone's attention turned to Mug-Z, where the celebration went till 6 pm and then continued
further at Marty's till 4 am. Laughs were had, stories were told, and everyone enjoyed the day better than last year
when the undergrads and their coachese cried like little school children for 3 straight hours. Old Maroon thanks their
friends in the NYPD who joined them on the pitch as well as Viking's fellow soldier from Fort Drum, who enjoyed lacing up
with the Champions.
